We Are One: Reflection for 20 October 2026

We are one. Reflection for 20 October 2026.

In our first reading for today’s Mass (Ephesians 2:12-22), St Paul reminds us that we were once “strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope”. Yet through the blood of Christ those who were “far off have been brought near”. Jesus broke down the dividing walls of hostility to form “one new humanity”, reconciling all people to God in one body.

This timeless truth came alive in Cape Town on 17 October 2026 during our Archdiocesan gathering with immigrant communities from Europe and Asia. In a world often fractured by xenophobia and fear of the unknown, our diverse gathering in the archdiocese serves as a prophetic sign. We are reminded that our true identity is not defined by borders, languages or legal status, but by our shared baptism.

When we embrace otherness, we do not merely tolerate a neighbour. We welcome a brother or sister. As St Paul declares, “you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God”. The call is to dismantle the walls of prejudice in our parishes, workspaces and neighbourhoods. By opening our hearts to the rich heritages of our immigrant brothers and sisters, we allow Christ our cornerstone to build us together into a holy temple, a true dwelling place for God.
