Baptism and Marriage Certificates

A note for Researchers and those looking for Baptism and Marriage records:

There is no central archive or registry for the recording of Baptisms and Marriages in the Archdiocese of Cape Town. All records of these are kept at the church or parish at which the Sacrament took place.

Should you know the name of the parish or its geographical location, please obtain contact details from the ‘Parishes’ section of our website: http://adct.org.za/parishes/ and contact the parish directly.

However, should you not have access to this information – or if your research takes you back to the 1800s or early 1900s and you do not know the name of the Parish/Church or it’s geographical location – please contact the Archdiocesan Archivist at archives@adct.org.za and we will endeavour to assist you.

Before contacting a parish you should have the following information at hand: the name(s) of the person(s) you are researching; preferably the exact, or approximate, date of the Baptism or Marriage; and the name of the Parish or Church at which the Sacrament took place.

Please note that the Church is unable to issue or obtain certificates of birth and death. For these you will need to contact the South African Department of Home Affairs. For reference, see the Civic Services tab on  www.dha.gov.za/index.php/civic-services/birth-certificates
